vCard

The contact card that predates smartphones.

Where it came from

vCard was created in 1995 by the Versit consortium (Apple, AT&T, IBM, Siemens) as electronic business cards for PDAs. Version 3.0 (1998) stabilized the property model everyone uses; 4.0 (2011) refined it.

Its second life came via QR codes — WiFi passwords aside, 'scan my contact' cards are vCards in disguise.

How it works

A VCF file is a list of properties: `BEGIN:VCARD`, then `FN:Name`, `TEL;TYPE=CELL:+1234567890`, `EMAIL:...`, ending with `END:VCARD`. Parameters after semicolons qualify properties; long lines fold at 75 chars with continuation spaces; special characters escape with backslashes.

Repeated properties (multiple phones, addresses) naturally map to JSON arrays — which is exactly what UWC's converter preserves, along with TYPE parameters.

Convert vCard

VCF to JSON for scripts and imports — parsed locally, contact data stays yours.
